National Student Design Competition 2013-14 :
Introduction :
In Indian community, traditions are deeply rooted despite modern lifestyle. Children learn these traditions from their parents and pass them on to their future generations. One such traditional practice is pilgrimage that almost all religions follow, in one form or the other. A pilgrimage is a journey of spiritual connect and faith, and it is practiced all over the world. Generally, it is a visit to a holy place of significance to a person’s beliefs and faith. It is strongly believed that one must visit such sites at least once in their life time. In India, there are several associated auspicious rituals, beliefs and stories with these sites, and a number of people visit to pray for good health and well being. This includes a lot of people with disabilities, elderly, children and women. This also includes rural people ingrained in poverty and illiteracy. The School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal, an autonomous institution of MHRD, Government of India, is premier Institute of National Importance. With a commitment to support social, cultural and environmental sustenance in the community, the school organizes a ‘National Student Design Competition’ on ‘Design for All/Universal Design’ every year. This year 2013-14, the school plans to launch this design competition with an aim to promote universal usability in pilgrimage sites in India.

Objectives Of The Competition :
Many universal design questions will make up the studio investigation : What facilities exist for the pilgrims in the site and how they support equal access and usability to include elderly, women, children, and people with disabilities- Holy places offer a unique mindset about ‘charity’ and ‘assistance’ to older, disabled and poor people, and how that perspective frames universal design of facilities in these sites- While universal design’s ‘independence for all’ focus is well grounded in western lifestyle of people living independently, what role does universal design play in India’s inter-dependent society where most people live with others- There are good international examples of universal design; how universal design can be implemented in existing culturally rich pilgrimage site- The students are expected to develop Inclusive, human centered, innovative, and contextual designs for any one pilgrimage sites in India. The site should be largely visited by people and can be located anywhere in the country. It may be government or private owned, or may/may not be from any particular religion.
