Eligibility Criteria For Adoption:
Who can Adopt?
As per Juvenile Justice (Care & Protection of Children) Act 2000 as amended from time to time , the court may allow a child to be given in adoption –
** to a person irrespective of marital status; or
** to parents to adopt a child of the same sex irrespective of the number of living biological sons or daughters, or
** to a childless couple

Additional Eligibility Criteria:
** 2 years of stable relationship in case PAPs are married
** To adopt children in the age group of 0-3 years, the maximum composite age of the PAPs should be 90 years wherein the individual age of the PAPs should not be less than 25 years and more than 50 years.
** To adopt children above three years of age, the maximum composite age of the PAPs should be 105 years wherein the individual age of the PAPs should not be less than 25 years and more than 55 years.
** A single PAP desiring to adopt should not be less than 30 and more than 50. The maximum age shall be 40 years to adopt children in the age group of 0-3 years and 50 years for adopting children above 3 years.
** PAPs should have adequate financial resources to provide a good upbringing to the child;
** PAPs should have good health and should not be suffering from any contagious or terminal disease or any such mental or physical condition which may prevent them from taking care of the child;
** A second adoption is permissible only when the legal adoption of the first child has been finalised;
** Single male is not permitted to adopt a girl child

Instructions For Online Parent Registration for Adoption :
** Register only with one adoption agency perfearbly nearest to your place of residence
** Give accurate details of residential address and telephone no. with area code
** No addition / alteration shall be allowed after the Application Form is submitted
** After successful registration, please note down your registration no. and password carefully
** In case of incomplete/wrong information, your application is liable to be treated as invalid
** After provisional registration, you should contact the agency with requisite documents
** All original documents will have to be produced for verification
** Your eligibility for adoption will be decided by the adoption agency

List of Documents Required for Adoption :
The following documents are required to be produced in original along with two self attested copies by the PAPs.
** Proof of identity(voter card/pan card/passport/driving license)
** Proof of address indicating residence in India exceeding 365 days
** Marriage Certificate
** Family Photograph
** Health certificate by a registered medical practitioner certifying that the PAPs are not suffering from any contagious or terminal disease or any such mental or physical condition which may prevent them from taking care of the child.
** Three recent postcard sized photographs of the adoptive family.
** Two letters of recommendation from persons who know the family well. Such recommendations should not be from immediate relatives of either spouse.
** If the PAPs are self-employed, IT statement for the last three years and if they are employed, Income Certificate from the employer also indicating the date of superannuation.
** Financial statement including copies of bank statement for the last six months, details of movable and immovable property owned by the family and details of loans taken by the PAPs.
** Written consent of the biological and/or adopted child/children and if they are above 7 years of age.
** Adoption decree, if the couple have adopted child/children earlier.
** Divorce/legal separation decree in case of single PAP if applicable.
** Letter from close relative of single PAP stating that in the event of any unforeseen circumstance, the relative would take care of the child.

(It is clarified that infertility certificate is not required from the PAPs wishing to adopt a child)

Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Women & Child Development, Government of India. It functions as the nodal body for adoption of Indian children and is mandated to monitor and regulate in-country and inter-country adoptions. CARA is designated as the Central Authority to deal with inter-country adoptions in accordance with the provisions of the Hague Convention on Inter-country Adoption, 1993, ratified by Government of India in 2003.

CARA primarily deals with adoption of orphan, abandoned and surrendered children through its associated /recognised adoption agencies.
