Fellowships :
The Institute has a full-time Ph.D. programme for students and as well as teaching scholars. The emphasis of the programme is not on the number of candidates admitted but on the quality of work. As a result of this, and the facilities (albeit limited), freedom and flexibility which the students enjoy, the doctoral theses of the Institute have won recognition for their quality, rigour, and originality. Some of them have been revised and published as books, while material from quite a few others has been revised and published in scholarly journals.

At present three different categories are available for the doctoral programme :
ICSSR Doctoral Fellowships :
Every year the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) is sponsoring four students for carrying out their Ph.D. degree in Social Sciences.

Eligibility :
Doctoral fellowships are open to persons preferably below the age of 35 (relaxable by 5 years in case of SC/ST), who have a Master’s degree of a recognised University with a first or high second class with 55% of marks in Social Science Degree. Candidates must have cleared the National Education Test (NET) of the UGC [or] M Phil [or] Two years of research experience with publications. Candidates who got JRF from UGC can also apply. They have to apply for fellowship directly to UGC. Reservation as per UGC norms. The successful candidate will have to be registered under the supervision of one of the faculty members of the Institute.

Area of Research :
Economics / Sociology / Political Science

Duration :
The duration of the fellowships for student category will be for a maximum period of 3 years and for teaching scholar will be of 2 years.

Value of the Fellowship :
As approved by ICSSR (Students) the value of the fellowship amount for the first two years will be of Rs. 16,000/= per month with a contingency of Rs. 15,000/= per year. Duration of the fellowship is two years and extendable by one year.

Salary protection fellowship will be given for teaching scholars for a maximum duration of two years and will not be extended under any circumstances.

RBI Doctoral Fellowships :
The Reserve Bank of India established a Chair in applied research in regional economics in the Institute in 1985 for five years. In 1991 the RBI extended support to this Unit on a continuing basis subject to periodic review. Since 1993 the RBI has been granting fellowships to Ph.D. scholars, not exceeding four at a time.

Eligibility :

Value of the Fellowship :
The value of the fellowship is Rs. 12,000 per month and a contingency grant of Rs 10,000/= per annum.

Scholarship:

The Mrs Elizabeth Adiseshiah Ph.D. Merit Scholarship :
The Mrs Elizabeth Adiseshiah Ph.D. Merit Scholarship, was created to provide training and facilities for talented researchers to pursue high-quality academic research dedicated to development issues in Tamil Nadu.

Area of Research :
The scholar is to be chosen from any social science discipline, on the basis of demonstrated academic competence and interest in the field of political, economic or social development in Tamil Nadu.

Eligibility :
(1) M.Phil degree in social sciences (relaxable only in exceptional cases);
(2) The successful candidate will have to be registered under the supervision of one of the faculty members of the Institute.

Duration :
The fellowship will be available for a maximum period of 3 years. The selected scholar will be taken as an intern for the first year of the programme and the renewal of the scholarship will be subject to satisfactory performance in research in the six-monthly assessment of the Institute

Value of Fellowship :
To the successful candidate the Institute will offer a monthly scholarship of Rs.12,000 and a Contingency Grant of Rs.10,000 per annum.

Selection Procedure :
The selection is on the basis of qualifications, research proposal (not exceeding 750 words) and personal interview.
