Ph. D. Programme – 2014 :
Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar is an autonomous research institution within the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. The research activities in the Institute centers around theoretical & experimental physics in the areas of condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, high-energy physics and quantum computation. The institute has a large number of experimental facilities such as the 3 MeV Pelletron accelerator (and associated beam lines for carrying out Rutherford back scattering/Channeling, proton induced X- ray emission (PIXE), accelerator mass spectroscopy (AMS), Implantation etc.), low energy negative ion implantation facility, high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X- ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), X- ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray reflectometry & standing waves, micro-Raman, photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-VIS spectrophotometer, scanning probe microscopy (SPM), molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), ion beam induced nanopatterning facility, a large area-high precision atomic force microscopy (AFM) with in-built nanoindentation & nanolithography, a high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM) system, focused ion beam (FIB) system, surface profilometer, physical property measurement system (PPMS), magnetic property measurement system (SQUID VSM), etc. In the area of thin film and nanomaterials growth, new facilities such as UHV e-beam evaporation system, DC/RF sputtering system with glancing angle deposition facility to grow 3-D nanostructures and pulsed laser deposition are being created. The Institute has also been actively involved in several international collaborations, notable among them are experiments in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions at CERN, Geneva and BNL, USA.

One of the important objectives of the Institute is to train and guide young scholars for research in physics. For this, the Institute has regular Ph.D program. It comprises of one year of Course Work. This Course Work is designed to train fresh M.Sc. students for conducting research activities. It is aimed at imparting a broad based training in advanced physics and research methodology. The course work is planned with the view that it should help a student not only in doctoral research, but also enable him/her to become a good physics teacher. Course Work runs from August to June every year. On successful completion of the course-work, the students are eligible to join for research under the supervision of faculty members of the Institute, leading to the Ph.D. degree awarded by Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), a deemed-to-be University within the Department of Atomic Energy.

The Institute provides hostel accommodation (on campus) for the all the Doctoral scholars. During the First two years of the Ph.D program ( i.e during course-work and 1st year of research work), students are paid a fellowship of Rs. 16,000/- p.m. On satisfactory completion of the two years of the Ph. D. program, students are placed in Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) grade and are paid Rs. 18,000/- p.m. fellowship. In addition, there is a contingency grant of Rs. 20,000/- per year to meet expenses on books and for domestic travel to attend conferences and workshops. The HBNI also supports the students for participating in an International conference once during the doctoral programme. Medical facilities are also available to the students which are at par with the regular employees.

Qualifications :
The Institute invites application for its regular Ph. D program from Indian nationals having the following qualifications;
A. M.Sc. in Physics with a minimum of 55% marks (in aggregate).
B. A valid GATE score and rank up to 200.
OR
CSIR-UGC- NET (only JRF Qualified) qualifiers within the last one-year.
OR
Candidates who are offered DST-Inspire fellowship for carrying out Ph. D program.
i) Candidates who have qualified JEST-2014 with a minimum score of 40 marks (cutoff rank of 240) need not send any application. They will be contacted directly by the Institute. If a candidate has scored less than 40 marks (cutoff rank of 240) in JEST-2014 but satisfies any of the criteria mentioned above, he/she is encouraged to send the application.
ii) Candidates appearing for the final semester/year of M.Sc., and who already satisfy criteria (B) as mentioned above can also apply. In case of non-availability of the M.Sc. results at the time of joining of Ph. D., the admission will be treated as provisional.

Admission Procedure :
All eligible candidates, whether through JEST-2014 or through direct application against this advertisement, will have to appear for a short written test on the morning of 18th June, 2014.
