Award of Research Fellowships 2014-15 :
The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai, in partnership with The Kusuma Trust (UK) and The Kusuma Foundation (India) invite applications from Indian citizens currently working in the social/education and development sectors for award of five (5) research fellowships during 2014-15.

About IIPS and the Kusuma Foundation Research Fellowships :
The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) situated at Deonar, Mumbai, was established in 1956 by the United Nations and Government of India as a demographic training centre for Asia and the Pacific Region. In 1985 the UGC accorded the Deemed University status to the Institute. Currently, the Institute runs three masters courses (two in Population Studies – another in distance learning mode, and one in Bio-Statistics & Epidemiology) and research degrees (M.Phil and Ph.D). The Institute has a unique standing as the only university in the world solely dedicated to population sciences. With well-qualified faculty drawn from various disciplines, the Institute has some exemplary research to its credit, including two very large-scale surveys, namely the National Family Health Surveys (NFHS) and District Level Household Surveys (DLHS) (both completed three rounds).

The Kusuma Foundation (India) is a registered non-profit company based in Delhi and part of the Kusuma Trust (UK), an independent, charitable grant making organization, with a mission to facilitate and increase access to education and other life opportunities. The Foundation has recently signed a partnership agreement with IIPS to initiate a three-year Research Fellowship programme to promote research in education in India. The main objective of the partnership is to train and impart research skills to young professionals and faculty working in NGOs and colleges who have the potential but not the opportunity, to conduct research on education issues of national importance and relevance to Kusuma’s strategic priorities. The fellowship should also enable the fellows to disseminate their findings at national and international forums.

The research fellowship will provide selected candidates with high-level research skills including knowledge of statistics, qualitative research and data analysis. Fellows will be trained in identifying, defining and justifying research problems and carrying out studies of national importance. The Fellowship will enable participants to carry out independent studies and publish in national and international peer reviewed journals.

The Fellowship :
A fellowship amount of Rs. 150,000 (Rupees one lakh fifty thousand only) each for a period of one year will be awarded to five successful candidates. The fellowship has no separate contingent grant or fund earmarked for different items such as data collection, but it excludes tuition fees, travel, and accommodation expenses during training at IIPS, Mumbai. The fellowship amount will be disbursed during the tenure accordingly as the programme progressed.

The fellowship will consist of four training modules on research methodology, each with one week duration (five working days) at IIPS. The five selected fellows will attend a training module once every quarter. During the course of the trainings, fellows will identify and define an area of research relevant to secondary and higher education and employment in India, and then carry out the research over the course of the year. Research will primarily focus on two districts, viz. Sambalpur (Orissa) and Hardoi (Uttar Pradesh), and the fellows will work on issues relevant to Kusuma’s strategic priorities.

The training modules have been prepared by experts in the field, keeping in mind the mission of the Foundation and the selected fellows.

Experienced mentors from IIPS will support fellows to carry out their research. Mentors will also guide Fellows in writing the papers and help them to publish their research in peer-reviewed journals. A dissemination workshop will be organised at the end of the Fellowship. The workshop will bring together different stakeholders involved in education to share key findings of the studies carried out by the IIPS-Kusuma Fellows.

All selected fellows will be required to sign a contract. The tenure of fellowship is one year. During the fellowship tenure, fellows need not take study leave but must compulsorily attend all the four one-week training modules at IIPS. Extension of fellowship tenure maybe entertained only in exceptional cases and at IIPS discretion.

The fellowship is scheduled for launched in June, 2014, and training workshop of the Module one for the successful fellows will be held during 21 – 25 July, 2014.

Preference maybe be given to candidates who are currently teaching or working in colleges/development sectors and possessing higher degrees such as M.Phil and/or currently enrolled in PhD programme.
