Bioversity International established the Abdou-Salam Ouédraogo Fellowship for research on conservation and use of forest genetic resources in sub-Saharan Africa to honour the memory and celebrate the work of Dr Abdou-Salam Ouédraogo. The Fellowship is awarded annually to a scientist from a university or national research institute in sub-Saharan Africa, with support from the CGIAR Research Program for Forests, Trees and Agroforestry.

An outstanding forest genetics specialist, Dr Ouédraogo, led Bioversity International’s forest programme from 1993-1999. He then became the Regional Director for sub-Saharan Africa, leading Bioversity International’s activities in this region until his untimely death in a plane crash in January 2000.

Dr Ouédraogo was the founding Director of the Forest Tree Seed Centre in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso and served on a range of international forestry committees. He left an indelible mark on Bioversity International and the world forestry community as a whole. His vision to bring young African scientists into the international research environment is embraced by the Abdou-Salam Ouédraogo Fellowship.
