Essay Competitions for Students on “Safeguarding Environment for Disaster Risk Reduction”

National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), constituted under the Disaster Management Act 2005 has been entrusted with the nodal national responsibility for human resource development, capacity building, training, research, documentation and policy advocacy in the field of disaster management.

India is prone to various natural disasters like flood, drought, desertification, cyclone, earthquake, landslide, forest-fire, pest-attack, epidemic, etc. Environmental degradation, including climate-change, land-use changes and natural resource degradation are aggravating disaster occurrences and impacts.

NIDM will be organizing an Awareness Programme on the eve of “World Environment Day” (4th June 2014 at New Delhi) with an objective to create awareness among students and other sections of the society for “Safeguarding Environment for Disaster Risk Reduction”. To create awareness among students on this important issue, NIDM is organizing an essay competition on the theme “Safeguarding Environment for Disaster Risk Reduction”.

Entries from students are invited by 23rd May 2014. First prize is of Rs. 10,000; Second Rs. 7,000; Third Rs. 5,000 and five consolation prizes of Rs. 1,000 in each group for each activity along with certificates will be awarded to the winners.

COMPETITION FOR STUDENTS:
There will be ESSAY WRITING COMPETITIONS on the theme ‘Safeguarding Environment for Disaster Risk Reduction”’ for the school students. The different categories of the competitions are:
(1) Class 8th – 10th: (Hindi)
(2) Class 8th – 10th: (English)
(3) Class 11th – 12th: (Hindi)
(4) Class 11th – 12th: (English)

How to participate:
Students can write essay (upto 1000 words) under the guidance of a teacher of the school, and can send their entries, duly typed/printed on A-4 size paper, single side) to reach us latest by 23rd May 2014 along with a cover letter giving details, i.e., name of student, father’s name, class and name of schools, name and contact details of the guiding teacher from the school, and student’s complete home address, including phone & mobile and email (in the format enclosed). One student can only send one entry for each category. Entries may be sent on the address given below by post/courier or in person by 23rd May 2014 (5.00 pm).

Awards:
Panel of Judges will evaluate the entries for 1st, 2nd and 3rd position and for Consolation prizes, from all the entries received in each category. Prizes and certificates will be distributed for the selected essays in the programme on 4th June 2014.
