The National Board of Examinations (NBE) was established in 1975 by the Government of India with the prime objective of improving the quality of the Medical Education by establishing high and uniform standards of postgraduate examinations in modern medicine on an all India basis.
NBE conducts postgraduate and postdoctoral examinations in approved disciplines leading to the award of Diplomate of National Board. The Medical Council of India has laid down standards for postgraduate examinations conducted by various medical colleges and affiliated to concerned universities, yet the levels of proficiency and standards of evaluation vary considerably in these institutions, leading to lack of uniform and acceptable benchmarks for assessment and qualification.

Moreover, intra country and international comparison is facilitated with the availability of commonly accepted evaluation mechanism like the DNB. The Diplomate National Board final examinations are conducted on all India basis on standardized format and multiple assessment tools are used for assessing the candidate.
